The Penang government’s controversial plan to erect multi-lingual signboards in heritage zones to cater for the needs of foreign visitors will now turn into a courtroom battle.
A newly-formed NGO comprising Malay graduates today filed a suit seeking a High Court injunction against both the state government and the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) from erecting the signboards.
The group calls itself Gabungan Graduan Melayu Muda (GGMM) or Young Malay Graduates Federation.
Now we have a bunch of not-so bright graduates (or ex graduates since most of them are in their 30s) wants to sue The Pearly Island for ‘undermining’ the national language. Please notice that they are a newly formed group. Newly formed already making stupid statements like that.
Brace yourself for more mind boggling statements to come. Follow like HINDRAF lah, at least they are demanding 1 Trillion from United Kingdom. How much do you think this NGO can sue Penang? Sorry lor, cannot sue them 1 trillion lor, since the current government inherited huge debt from the previous administration.
Maybe it is a good thing that opposition did not take over Melaka after all because the state is owing more than RM1 billion from the Federal Government. Going back to the undermining national language issue, I still do not understand how adding signage in different languages can undermine Bahasa Malaysia.
Not to say I am disrespecting the national language but I honestly feel Bahasa Indonesia is widely spoken than Bahasa Malaysia and I doubt suing Penang can do much in preserving its status. This suing fiasco is going to put our national language into bad light even further because it gets increasingly embarrasing enough to see such news are making headlines in Malaysiakini and mainstream papers.
I tell you what, why not just revert everything back to the colonial names? It is still in English, and I don’t think many Mainland Chinese are going to outnumbered the Mat salleh tourists. For fuck sake, GGMM, if you really care about the language, stop this suing drama already.
